As a mirrored image of classes of sexuality so sharply outlined by the federal government and society at massive, early lesbian subculture developed inflexible gender roles between girls, particularly among the many working class within the United States and Canada. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) stipulates that it's because ladies have been seen as subordinate to men, and the Nazi state feared lesbians less than gay males. Although lesbianism was not specifically criminalized by Paragraph 175, some lesbians reclaimed the black triangle symbol as gay males reclaimed the pink triangle, and lots of lesbians also reclaimed the pink triangle. Regardless of the lack of information about homosexuality in scholarly texts, one other discussion board for studying about lesbianism was rising. Speaking of homosexuality in any context was socially forbidden, and ladies not often discussed lesbianism even amongst themselves; they referred to overtly gay folks as "in the Life". Of the latter two, the gay rights movement and the feminist motion linked after a violent confrontation occurred in New York City within the 1969 Stonewall riots.
