In January 1994, Farrar called supervisor Tony Margherita to tell him of his determination to go away the band. The cloaked determine remained behind, watching Malfoy. Now a 5-piece, Uncle Tupelo recorded their main label debut at Cedar Creek studio in Austin, Texas in early 1993. Anodyne consisted of live-in-the-studio recordings and included a duet with Farrar and Doug Sahm of the Sir Douglas Quintet. Wade Farrar was the lead singer of the band, but his dedication to Southern Illinois College and an attempted enlistment in the United States Military meant he was only able to dedicate a small period of time to the group.
